EDWARD DWURNIK

Edward Dwurnik was one of the greatest painters of the 20th and 21st centuries in Poland. The artist realized his works in several cycles, thematically consisting of landscapes, urban vedutas of a very peculiar, chronicle character, paintings referring to history and current events, abstractions in which he referred to Pollock. Edward Dwurnik’s works are in private and museum collections in Poland and around the world. The artist’s heritage is managed by the Edward Dwurnik Foundation.
EDWARD DWURNIK (born in 1943, d. 2018)
Painter, illustrator, graphic artist. In 1963-70 he studied painting, graphic arts and sculpture at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. In 1965, independently of his course of studies, he began his drawings and watercolour series. The year 1966 marks the birth of his “Hitch-hiking” (Podróże autostopem) series, distinctive birds eye view cityscapes. Dwurnik created many cycles of paintings – for example “Sportsmen”/“Sportowcy” (1972-1978).
Apart from painting Dwurnik pursued and practiced drawing and graphic arts creating independent series as well as illustrations. The artist enjoyed designing monumental painted compositions which transforme the public space. In 2007 he created drawings and gouaches for “Grocery shop, 360 degrees” (“Warzywniak, 360 stopni”), an animated film by Andrzej Barański. His works are to be found in private and public collections around the world.
Edward Dwurnik is considered to be one of the most recognizable Polish contemporary artists. He was awarded with the prestigious award founded by Coutts & Co Foundation in Zurich (1992).
