Portraits of Memory
Antoni Fałat – Painting
The exhibition “Portraits of Memory: Antoni Fałat – Painting” is a tribute to the work of the eminent artist who passed away in 2024 and who, for decades, shaped the language of Polish figurative art. The “Portraits of Memory” showcase offers a unique opportunity to experience works that evocatively reference history and memory. The exhibition will feature pieces from key periods, sourced from his family’s private collection.
This exhibition provides a rare chance to engage with works coming directly from the artist’s estate. Antoni Fałat was an independent creator, consistently pursuing his own profoundly evocative artistic vision. His paintings are more than just compositions; they are deep commentaries on the transformations of the modern world, Polish heritage, and contemporary issues, approached with immense empathy and mindfulness.
An alumnus of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts under Professor Aleksander Kobzdej (graduating with honors in 1969), the artist was engaged in social and artistic life from the very beginning of his career. He was the founder of the groups “Aut” (Aut Pictura Aut Nihil), which emphasized the absolute primacy of painting in a creator’s life, and “O poprawę” (For Improvement), which advocated for a stronger connection between the art world and social reality. In 1992, he established the European Academy of Arts, one of the first private art universities in Poland, which became an international hub for nurturing young talent. Professor Fałat’s legacy is highly regarded both in Poland and abroad; his works have been exhibited at the UN headquarters in Geneva and the European Parliament in Brussels. The artist was honored with numerous distinctions, including the Gold Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis, the title “Merit for the City of Warsaw,” and the Medal of the Commission of National Education.
His canvases – such as the famous The Cyclist, Polish Family from the End of the Century, or You Live Dignified, and We Live Comfortably—have permanently entered the canon of Polish art, finding their place in the collections of the National Museums in Warsaw, Kraków, and Gdańsk, as well as the Zachęta National Gallery of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent.
